Helen and Kurtis are a lovely laid-back couple whose willingness to tie the knot was so strong they planned a wedding during a pandemic! Even though they had a ‘Covid wedding’, their original plan was to have an intimate London wedding. The restriction on the number of guests has not really been a concern for them. To make things easy for themselves and support small businesses, they tried to keep their wedding local and as simple. Helen’s flowers were from the creative florists of Sage in Peckham, Kurtis’ suit from their local tailor, in SE London, their photographer (me!) from Brixton.

They got married at the Marylebone Old Town Hall in central London. The Westminster room was spacious enough to accommodate their 28 guests socially distanced. Even though the guests’ mouths were covered, you could still see them ‘smizing’ (smiling with their eyes ;), thank you Tyra for that very coining that word), hands were sanitised before holding the pen to sign the register and everyone kept a safe distance from the registrar. You’d think that all these safety measures in place would put a damper on the ceremony but it was quite the opposite, it made it even more special and in a weird way, it created kind of a bond between people, it really showed that we are all in this together and that the desire to get married is stronger than a virus!

After a lovely walk for a few couple photos around the town hall, we took a taxi to Hyde park where they had their relaxed wedding reception. They came up with a pretty alternative idea: picnic reception! It suited the occasion perfectly. The company Pique made it all effortless: they found a free spot in Hyde Park, set up the blankets, provided the food & drinks and the guests just had to turn up. A real picnic without the hassle!

‘We originally planned a big BBQ and party at a pub, with the main goal of having all of our friends and family together with good food and drinks. Due to the pandemic our original plan changed (several times!), so we moved as much as possible to outside and still managed to get some of our favorite people together for a fun day.’ Celebrating love in these odd times felt even more special. Don’t let Covid ruin your wedding plans. Have a celebration with your really close ones, embrace the intimacy of your celebration and you will have a wonderful day just like these two did!
